About Gankeng Hakka Village

The hat is the symbol of the place: a bamboo disc with a hole in the center and a black cloth fringe around it, made to shield the face of those working in the fields. Gankeng produced this liangmao for more than 200 years, and in the 1970s and 1980s nearly every house in the village made hats for export.

Today the village is a cultural area built by the OCT group around the old buildings and, in 2017, it made one of the first national lists of culture and tourism villages. Look for the Zhuangyuan mansion, from the Yongzheng period (1723 to 1735), the Nanxiang building, more than 120 years old, and the watchtowers, and take the chance to try Hakka food.
