About Dapeng Fortress

Pirates were both the reason and the test. Built in 1394 in the east of present-day Shenzhen, Dapeng Fortress held out in 1571 against a siege of more than 40 days, with the attackers using ladders to try to get over the walls. Centuries later, it was one of the region's defense points in the Opium War against the British.

Protected by the city since 1983 and by the province since 1989, it gained a museum devoted to its history in 1996. It is about 55 km from the center, so it is not a half-hour outing: set aside the day, preferably a fourth day of your trip, and combine it with the east coast.
